Remarks :
1937 Classic Hillyard 4 ton - featured in Jocelyn Greenaway's Puffin's Log
This Hillyard 4 ton was built in 1937 and is a fine example of style and history for the purist sailor who appreciates wooden boatbuilding, and the craftsmanship and build quality demonstrated during the late 30’s.
Puffin was rebuilt by Jasper Loveless at the Underfall yard in Bristol over a period of several years from 2011 to 2019, new stem, apron, some planking, deck and cabin fibreglass sheathed, new cockpit, new hatches.
Current owner purchased puffin in 2020, and commissioned the interior fitting out by professionals RB boatbuilding (cost £3500) with custom bunk cushions. Pictures available from before the interior was built.
The remaining work - mainly the electrics and solar panel, was done by the current owner:
Solar panel, controller, leisure battery
USB and 12v chargers
Led navigation lights
Other Inventory:
Mainsail and Jib in good condition.
Custom boom tent and cockpit cushions
New 2022 Yamaha 6hp 4 stroke on raising/lowering transom bracket internal and remote tanks
Standing rigging 2019
5kg Delta anchor with 20m galvanised chain
Steering compass
Depth sounder
Avon redstart dinghy with wooden oars
Porta potti (unused)
Portable gas cooker
Lines and fenders
Life jackets
First aid kit
Fire extinguisher
Puffin was sailed across the channel in 2022 Chichester to Dieppe and then cruised through the canals to Sete, South of France. The owners have spent the summer 2023 cruising the Mediterranean coast and are now looking to sell due to having to return to the uk and work/life commitments.
Puffin has a winter mooring secured in Port Vauban, paid up to November.
The exact number of yachts built by Hillyard's is not known. It could have been as many as 800 and there are records of around 600 with tonnages between 2.5 and 29. The yachts quality of sea kindliness is legendary.
David Hillyard established his reputation as a builder of pinnaces and other small wooden vessels for the Admiralty in the First World War. In the very early 1920's he commenced building sailing yachts at the yard in Littlehampton for private ownership. One of the earliest, Twinkler 4 tons 1922, is still being sailed by owners Ted and Diana Evans out of Woodbridge on the River Deben, Suffolk.
